Silverfox Hustle SPL Preview - Geylang Int'l FC
How do you replace a striker who scored 44 goals and broke multiple league records? That's the challenge facing Geylang International head coach Noor Ali as he enters his tenth season with the Eagles.
Following an impressive third-place finish last campaign, Geylang must now navigate life without Tomoyuki Doi, the Japanese sensation who netted an astonishing 44 goals including nine hat-tricks. Rather than seeking a like-for-like replacement, Noor Ali reveals his strategy to build a more balanced team that can "defend together and attack together" - acknowledging that last season's 97-goal tally simply won't be replicated.
The conversation offers fascinating insights into player recruitment philosophy, with Noor Ali preferring familiar faces over unknown quantities. This approach has led to strategic signings like veteran playmaker Shahdan Sulaiman, whose class and leadership are already making an impact in training. Meanwhile, Serbian defender Nikola Ignjatovic brings much-needed aggression as a "warrior" in defense, while young Korean midfielder Ko Jaehyun impresses with his technical ability and game intelligence.
Most revealing is Noor Ali's perspective on Singapore football's broader challenges: "We have to look at ourselves and realize we have not been good enough for the last five or ten years." With seven foreign player slots now available to all clubs, the contributions of local players will be crucial in determining success in what promises to be an incredibly competitive SPL season.
This is the Silver Fox Hustle podcast. This is the official SPL preview. And today we continue with Geylang International Football Club and with me in the house today is the head coach, noali Noali. How are you?
Speaker 2:I'm good man. I'm good man. Thanks for calling me again it's.
Speaker 1:It's a. It's gonna be a very interesting season and I think, geylang, on the back of last season, you guys finished in third place and with a thin squad as well. I think you guys put up some exciting performances as well, and powered by a certain Tomioki Doi as well. We're going to talk a little bit about him as well. It's going to be an interesting season. Now, how was the break before the pre-season started for you? Did you go overseas or anything like that?
Speaker 2:yeah, yeah, I mean I went for a short break, family short break, you know, just spend a bit time with them, because I think last year was a very, very long season for everyone, you know, and it's a bit tiring, you know, but also, again, a very short period for us to start preparing for the next season.
Speaker 1:I want to ask you about. You know your club, obviously, and this is the SPL preview. But you at the Community Shield just a couple of days ago, and it was BG against the Champions Lion City Sailors what did you make out of that game?
Speaker 2:I mean, of course it's a good opener, you know, to the new season, especially with an upset, you know, 4-1 win. I think everybody knows that LCS is the favourite to win the game, you know. But again, like I, it's a one-off game. This is a community shield. I think both teams have good quality players and we know that LCS and Tampines will always be contenders this season. But I think you can never rule out LCS. They started slow last season but they picked up and did very well to the end of the season. But it's interesting to see Tampines actually because a different side of what we have seen, gavin has been with the team for the last five years. This is, I think, the the way Akbar wants to set up the team and definitely they have some very, very good quality foreigners.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I thought it was quite a good watch. You know I was doing that game as well. It was very entertaining and obviously you go up against BGG this coming your first game. Obviously, right, I'm sure you picked up a few things and it's good to actually go out there and watch the game. Now we're going back to your club, geylang, right. What was your assessment of last season? Just the overall picture of the season that went by as well as you know, have you picked up some weaknesses of the side? And obviously there were many, right, but obviously just the main ones that you picked up.
Speaker 2:I mean the way we conceded goals last season. You know. I think that's something a bit of what we want to focus on this season. You know, especially we know the league for this season. So there's something that you know. I've looked at last season and definitely I don't think I'm going to reach 98 goals this season, you know. But again, I think, something that I look out through the whole season. I think we started strong at the start and then we start to falter right at the end of the season. I think I can say it also based on the depth issue that we have. But again, I think, how we had planned the season, I think it could have been done better. Maybe we could have done well at the later part.
Speaker 1:And don't forget, there are lesser games this season as well. I think the room for error in terms of, you know, faltering, you know, going through a bad patch you can't really go through that, really, you know, because then you have the other clubs trying to play catch up. So that's something to look at as well. Now, just, you know, just before pre-season obviously you're a coach and I've been a coach at that level as well and just before the season, you know there's lots of things going through your head, you know racing through and even while you're on holiday, I'm sure there's things going through your head phone calls and stuff like that. What was your main priority? You already spoke about one right Like in terms of player makeup. You know thinking about all these things. What was your main goal for this season? Priority wise.
Speaker 2:I think, priority wise, I think I want a team, more a team how do I put it? A teamwork kind of a team that can defend together and attack together as a team you didn't have that last season.
Speaker 2:I think I would say that. I think that's why I say it's not easy to score 50 goals when you have to press and also, you know, and score goals, you know. But I think, like I said, I can never find another Doi. You know that's 100%. You know it's going to be hard to replace him. So when you know you're going to lose a striker who can score 50 goals, I think you have to look at the whole balance of the team this season on how you can work together to achieve something. You know, for me it was hard because I lose Taka, you know, and I think he was a key player in terms of my build-up play, you know, and I think that's someone that's going to be hard to be replaced and my build up play, you know, and I think that's Someone that's going to be Hard to be replaced, and then Doy. So you basically Lose your spine and then you also lose Sakuma In terms of that, you know. So the three replacement Was not easy for me To actually look at and I think Years of coaching In the SBL Also, I know that it's it's it's a risk to actually sign too many players that you have not seen.
Speaker 2:You know videos sometimes you know if you send my videos. Also, sometimes I sign, you know. So the thing is that. So I prefer to look at the players that I've seen in the league and especially, you know, when you have a small squad and a team that is going to play like 30, 40 games, you need to know the players that you sign.
Speaker 1:So you are going In terms of Familiarity, you know, in terms of Knowing the players, and I think that's A good way to go as well. And you spoke a little bit About Doy. You know he scored 44 goals Last season and he beat Mirko Grabovac's Long record and he scored 9 hat-tricks last season. 9 hat-tricks in a season it's ridiculous in any league. And you guys scored 97 goals in total. So you minus that, 44 goals. It's a lot of goals and you just said it's very I wouldn't say very difficult. I don't think you're going to replace that. I think you said it at the beginning, right? So the way to go is not a one for one. Replacement is in the way you guys play. Is that what you're trying to say?
Speaker 2:as well. So I think, like you know, it's if you look at okay lah, I won't go Tampines, maybe I won't go LCS, I will maybe go Tampines. You know, I think they shed the number of goals that they scored. You know Kunori, you know they have. At that point they have Boris, they have. Then they have Inamoto, they have. You know they have players like Glenn or Faris who contribute goals and they still end up finishing in the top two, you know. So I don't think that you can find another striker like Doy. Maybe the league is too easy for him. You know it's very hard to explain this, doy.
Speaker 2:Phenomenal Because the thing is that you cannot get another finisher like this. You know he, just like you know he smell the goal. You know he know where is it he doesn't need to see. I think you have been commentating so many games, you know, and you know the kind of goals he scored. People might say I've been with him one year and that's what he does in training. You know he takes like 20-30 minutes To just Put the ball and sometimes I find it crazy Because he's talking alone, you know, and just kicking the ball. You know. But and when he happens in the game, Then we realise that.
Speaker 1:You see, I mean these are top not do too much of things, not to overdo things with him. Just you know, let him play.
Speaker 2:At the start. Yes, you know at the start. You know, of course, when you are doing well, then you just let him go a bit and then you know, because he's scoring goals and everything you know. But again, sometimes when you need to demand certain things from him in terms of the on, that he might not be defending or pressing for you, but he will just end up and pop up the winner for you, you know. So when you come back again the next day in training, it's like how do I actually, you know? So it's about managing him the whole season, you know. But he's a great lad, you know. I mean, like he approached everything very positively.
Speaker 1:It's, it's a balance being a manager or a coach. I think that's the. It's a skill that you probably pick up with experience as well. You know when to let go, when to be a little bit hard, and at this level, I think it's all about man management.
Speaker 2:It's as simple as that.
Speaker 1:And kudos to all the managers who have been coaching for 10, 20, 30 years of getting near heart attacks and stuff like that. It's the truth. You, 20, 30 years of, you know, getting near heart attacks and stuff like that, it's the truth. You mentioned a few players just now Ryo Sakuma, tezuka, who's left? You know, I think they are pretty. They're going to be misses as well. They're going to be a big miss as well, you know, I think Tezuka, you said he loves to drop and receive the ball. Ryo Sakuma has been a very good servant this season as well, and you're going to miss Iqbal. Iqbal is going. I think he's gone to Elbrex, is it?
Speaker 2:I'm not sure Okay.
Speaker 1:Iqbal. Then you've got Naki Udin as well, Ahmad, who's been there for a very long time. So these are the players that has left. Now let's talk about the players that has come in, right. Let's talk through these players as well. What does Tajeli brings to you? Nazrul as well you know they are defenders Gareth Lowe as well. What do they bring to you?
Speaker 2:I mean Basically, when we look at the, the whole structure Of how they want to put up the season With the seven foreigners, we know that the Four players and the rest Need to be key players and experience for me, you know, because If you, if you want to do well In certain position, like for me, you know, I've always loved to be An attacking side, you know. So I only have signed Only one centre back Foreigner, nico Nico. So I mean Tajli has played for me before, so I know what he can do, you know he can play as a centre-back, he can play as a right-back, you know, and he's good at going forward technically strong crosses in. The interesting part is Nazro, because is that I've only seen him play, you know, and and as in, you've never coached him before. I've never coached him before, you know, but, and I think after about two weeks I told him something that you know I said I didn't know he was that good, you know.
Speaker 2:You know, I mean, like you see him running down the flanks, but at the end of the day I always think, like, as a coach, it's a waste Because he doesn't have the end product, you know. But you know, as we spoke about this and you know, when we go to Vietnam Preseason game and you know, at 30 he's 32, I think, you know, and at that age he was he's still willing to learn and now he's getting better In terms of attacking, because at 32 he's still going up and down, know. So. So I think, uh and and gareth, I think, someone that I can uh trust on.
Speaker 1:I think he, he's quite versatile and I can depend on him now one player who I don't think it's a surprise that he's still playing, but one player that it's a surprise that you guys got in and I and I think this could be a a really good signing is shadan. You know, I think he you guys announced it last week, I think was it a long time coming the negotiations, or it's just that you know he happens to be free and yeah, so how did that.
Speaker 2:So you spoke to him earlier, I mean when, when the season ends, we wanted to bring him in. I mean, like I say, we're gonna lose Taka, so we know we need someone down there. We know Shadan can do the job, you know. But I think things doesn't work out that well at the start and then, I think, after what happened, when I think he he put it Instagram I think you know about certain things like you know so we thought that it's a waste if this guy Is retiring at this age, you know, I think he still has has A lot to contribute, you know, not only in football, I think his personality, you know he brings a lot of Respect in the team, you know.
Speaker 2:So he came down About one week and I think I've always seen him and you know every single game you play against him. It's going to be very hard, but he's not coachable man and I think he's just class. You know. He's just a different class. You don't have to coach him and tell him what to do. He knows what to do. He knows how to position himself. He's too experienced in terms of that and it's good to have someone like him on the pitch, because I think I got a lot young players on the in this side and most of them are looking at him and learning a lot from him, even in two weeks, you know.
Speaker 1:So he gives me a lot of other aspects besides football in terms of handling this team yeah, I think that's a good shout as well and, obviously, looking forward, you could use him probably in other roles as well and I think that's good for his future as well. And I just saw him last week and he looked really trim. Yeah, yeah, yeah For not being in actual pre-season and stuff. He looked really trim, so that's good. Now let's talk about the new foreign signings. Before that, obviously, you kind of like retained Bezekor and you retained Taniguchi, I think two of your very, very good midfielders. You know that's great. Now you kind of like strengthened your Japanese contingent. Right, you've got Hoshino back. You know that's a little bit of a surprise, but you know you a surprise. But you know you've got Fukushiro. I think he's one of the most skillful Japanese players around Yokoyama, who has been with Haogang, I believe Ogawa, who was at Young Lions for.
Speaker 1:Albrechts and then went to Young Lions so you've got that strong core of Japanese contingent. Talk us to Hoshino first. I think that's a surprise for me. Even you know for you guys to get Hoshino in.
Speaker 2:I think lot of people ask me why Hoshino? But again I say this, that we have to approach the season differently. You know, because the way I set up, I mean, like last season I had Doi, you know, the previous season I had Zuzul, you know, and I think we need a focal point. You know, at some point in the game, you know, and it gives a bit more variations in terms of the way we want to attack. We never have really a lot of presence in the box. Last season, you know, and a lot of our play is very predictable because when we go through the middle, you know, and that's the only way things can happen, and we know that we can go through the middle, you know, even this season, but it's about going out wide and then getting the crosses coming in. That's something that we lacked a lot last season.
Speaker 2:So, like I said again, I could have gambled on another player, which which I'm taking a risk on, you know, or I work on Hoshino and and see how he can fit into the team. And again you have Roya. You know that is something that you always think. These two guys, you know, have a certain understanding. And then, you know, especially when you have people like Yokoyama Kaisei. These fellas are all willing to work, you know.
Speaker 1:So I think with Hoshino around he gives me a different, different kind of approach in the game, but at least it gives me a bit more variations in terms of tactically on how I want to approach her that's great, and you know yokoyama also is one that was, I thought was pretty unlucky last season, you know, playing out wide sometimes for haogang, but before that, the year when they won the league, you know, I thought he was one of the best players you know in elbrac. So that's a good one. Let's talk about the two. I think it's the two new ones coming in. I think people want to know more about them. It's Nikola Ignatovic and Ko Jeun, right? So let's talk about Nikola first. What does he bring to the team?
Speaker 2:he's a centre back. He's a centre back, I think, I think, with Nikola. Basically I I think I think with Nico Is Basically I was looking for A different kind of centre back. You know I have two Japanese centre back Last season. I think they're very good On the ball Technically. We know that, you know. But at the same time I think you need a bit more Aggression in the league, you know, especially playing with the big boys. You know, and you know it's gonna be Tougher this season. You know it's going to be tougher this season with the foreign strikers up there.
Speaker 2:I know I can depend on Shaqie or Joshua as another centre-back because they are quite experienced and they have played at a very good level, and then it's something that I need to partner with another foreigner. So Nikos gave me a bit more aggression, good height, good headers of the ball. He's quite comfortable with the ball, but I think it's just that it's a different culture, you know. I mean, we spoke about this and you say in Serbia they play different kind of football. But he's adapting well in terms of that, and I think sometimes you need a warrior in the defence line, someone a bit more scary so he's a no-nonsense so he's a no-nonsense defender.
Speaker 1:He's a no-nonsense defender, I think. Yeah, I think sometimes we do forget about the defending bit. You know, we want to get a ball playing centre-back and then we try to play out, try to be funny, and then we lose the ball and then we get counter-attacked. So I think sometimes it's good to just stick to the basics, you know, ko.
Speaker 2:Jayun. Okay, this, he actually approached me personally, okay, and he was playing for Kelvin University, okay, you know. So he sent me his videos and everything, and then he was willing to come for trials and everything.
Speaker 1:So he's a Midfielder. Okay, he's a.
Speaker 2:That's the interesting part about this boy, because he can play as a centre, back and defensive mid but he plays these Libro roles very well.
Speaker 2:You know, if you want to play three, he can play as a centre, back and defensive mid, but he plays these Libro roles very well, you know. If you want to play three at the back, you know. So when I look at his videos and everything, I invited him to come. He wanted to come for trial, so I said I'm okay with that. So he came down and I was quite impressed because for I think he's 22? Young, yeah, young. So I was quite impressed. I was quite impressed. Aggression, you know, technically strong, good on the ball, you know, good speed, you know. And I was like Okay, I mean Like I still got time with this boy. You know he's still young, something that I can work on. You know he doesn't have good height, but again, his reading of the game Is one of the best you know. And Sometimes I think you also need a good sparring team during training sessions and these boys actually give you that kind of intensity in training. So that's good.
Speaker 1:Any more inclusions that we haven't spoke about. Something that is of interest, something interesting For now.
Speaker 2:No, no more. Nothing that we are looking at At this point of time.
Speaker 1:You happy with the squad At the moment For whatever that you have?
Speaker 2:I would say, okay, I mean, like we always Will look at the younger players In the, in the under 21s. Okay, I think A lot of players have Step up this season. I think we play like Ex have stepped up this season. I think we've played like Exxon, ryan, prince, you know, nizuan, you know, and I think that's good to see that these boys realize that. Okay, this is the level of competition I have to fight, you know. And I think one thing I like about this season is that, although you are playing with Sam Fon, the other side when you play sparring the boys never, it's never going to be easy, because there's also a bit more quality and the boys actually works hard for it, you know. So they know where, which level they need to be, so that's good.
Speaker 1:It's interesting, you spoke about the under-21s or the SPL2 team, because it's ageless, right, you can put in any number and register under SPL2. But it's going to be limited, isn't it? For the first team spot, because you spoke about four. So they've really got to fight and, like you said, I think it's a good thing because of that competition side. I think you're probably going to play roughly about the same foreigners if they are fit and if they are on form or whatever, but it's going to be a tough season for the local boys, isn't it?
Speaker 2:it's going to be tough, you know, but For me the SPL 2 Is never gonna be A gauge for my SPL boys.
Speaker 2:I think it's the only way Opportunity for the 21, the U21 boys, the younger boys to play Okay, sorry, man. So For me it's gonna be tough, for the younger boys, okay, but they also realise that they need to step up. I mean, at the end of the day, you have seen this season so many players local players have retired. But we also have to look at ourselves and ask why is this happening? You know, because for the league to play more competitive, for the teams to do well in ACL and the local players really have to step up and show that they are capable of doing the job. You know because there's no point complaining or saying things that you know why the seven foreign slot. But we have to look at ourselves and realize that we have not been good enough for the last five years, you know, or ten years, you know. So sometimes these kind of changes will maybe wake them up and boost a bit more in terms of our performance as a country.
Speaker 1:Good point. And how has pre-season been, with the training and obviously some friendly games you played? How has it been? I mean?
Speaker 2:it has been good. I think. We played GDT. We lost the game 4-2, but it was a good run out with them. We played two teams during that game, so it was nice to see all the boys get a run. And then we played Ho Chi Minh. I think that was a very, very good sign. You know, they had some national Vietnam national players. I think that I think in the first 15 minutes it was quite a shock because they were all over us. You know, I think after 1-0 down, then we start to slow down the game and start playing the way we wanted to play. I think it's normal in pre-season. I think the boys are adjusting a bit here and there. We lost to them 2-1, but I think it was a very, very good game, you know. And then the last game we played, we threw 1-1 with them, another good side, you know. So a lot of positive Nice and, like I say, we're not going to score 6-7 goals this season, but you know, a 1-0 win will always do.
Speaker 1:Is there something specifically that you've been working on, without giving too much away during pre-season, like you know, tactical stuff or whatever In general, I mean in general for me, pre-season, I always focus a lot on the individual behaviors of the players.
Speaker 2:I think that's very important in terms of making them understand what they need to do as a team. I think that's key for me Because eventually, if you get these things right, the team will basically fall together and it's going to be 27 games in the league and then it's going to be another 6 games in the cup. You know, and it will take time for you to gel as a team. You know you cannot play 3 pre-season games and then you know and think that just because you draw, you draw Bindong, and so it's going to be a long way. But I think more of focusing on because you have like, I have like Kaisei, I have like Shodai, who's quite new to the team. Hoshino, you know, and Nazrul, you know.
Speaker 2:Sometimes I think I think Nazrul is so used to be an inverted fullback in Haogang, you know. So sometimes I have to tell him that you must know when to do it. It's not just being there, you know. So sometimes I I mean, I understand the modern way of football, but you know, but sometimes it's when you do it, you know. So it's just like trying to make them understand what I need or the team needs, you know, in terms of that, yeah, he's been inverting too much, so you need to revert him.
Speaker 1:I always ask this question to the coaches and they always come up with the same answer. I'll ask you, anyway, which player to look out for. Is there a player that you think that you're going to look out for from Geylang, something that's going to, you know, probably a breakout season for this player?
Speaker 2:I mean, okay, kaise, I think Kaise, ogawa, right, ogawa. I think his boy is interesting. Okay, you know, it was hard to coach him Day one, you know, because I think why? I think the reason why he has his own way of Okay, the intention was to bring him and replace Taka. Okay, you know, then I realised that he actually Can do more Than whatever Taka do. You know, I think his mobility, his moving forward, you know he can score goals, you know it's a good technique, you know. So, as I work with him and Shodai and Shadan, and I realised that, oh, this guy is actually very, very interesting. I mean, people know Roya, people know Vincent H, vincent Hoshino, you know, but I think this guy is a bit interesting, you know, I think something that he can be very useful for me this season in terms of going forward.
Speaker 1:I think I'm just looking at and again you mentioning all those players just now. You know, and I think it's pretty safe to say that if you just have that first 11 and keep them fit, free from suspensions and whatever you guys are still going to, you know, compete with the best, you know LCS and BG and whatever you have right, and I think you still can have a good season. It's just about you know keeping that and keeping them free from injuries as well. And what can we expect from Geylang this season in terms of football?
Speaker 2:I mean I'm not going to change as much in terms of the approach. I think I'm a very attacking coach, you know. I have that kind of mindset, you know. But I think a bit more difference, I think, from last season is maybe you know the way we want to defend a bit, because I think it's the modern football right now that you know.
Speaker 2:You can see how cruel last night's game One set piece, one goal I love it. But, like I said, this is football. You can score from set piece, you can score from transitions, you can open play, but I think last year most of our goals came from open play and I think it's something that we goals comes from open play, you know, and I think something that we have to look and change a bit. I think that's something that you look at Tampines this season and you realise that they're not going to have like 70-80% of possession, like how Gavin does always, you know, but that one moment would hurt you with the attacking line they have, you know. So that's the approach a bit more, I would say, a bit more variations in terms of the way I want to approach next season, you know, and a bit more compact as a team, you know Okay.
Speaker 1:I think it's interesting as well, right, and we just spoke about the community shield. You know, with well, right and we just spoke about the community shield. You know, with BG and it's a different way of playing. You saw that it's so clear to see, fans can see that, coaches can see that, and it's a good thing. You can see the variation and you know they did well, although it's a one-off game, although it's a one-off game, but they did well. So kudos to them. And before we go on, come on, you gunners, this is your favourite question Targets for the season Targets for the season.
Speaker 2:I mean, we finished top three last season, you know. So I've definitely looked at to finish in the top three position, you know. I mean we cannot do lesser than that. I know that it's going to be very even this season, you know. I think you cannot rule out anybody, even Young Lions, you know, because all the team will have the same quality of seven foreigners. I think the local boys is going to be only four players, so I don't think there's a lot of difference. I think it's going to be Very, very tight this season. Maybe LCS has the edge At this point of time Because of the quality Of foreigners they have brought in, but and you have not seen LCS at their best yet yeah, but I think it's going to be Quite even. But I think one thing that we want to do well Is the cup, because I think the last two seasons we have not qualified For the semif.
Speaker 1:It's interesting, right, you speak about the seven foreigners thing, right? But yeah, you know they're pretty even In terms of the number Of foreigners. So wouldn't it be, you know the truth, that the local players Now are very important, the four, the four that plays right, they could make the difference as well. So I think that could, you know, be the difference Between the teams. So that's a Very interesting thought. Lastly, be the difference between the teams. So that's a very interesting thought.
